ESMS Student Philanthropy
Skype Kenya
Students in our Skype Kenya Club raise money through bake sales, movie nights, and other fundraisers to support our sister school, The Red Rose School in the Kibera slums outside of Nairobi, Kenya. ESMS students have provided scholarships for their friends in Kenya to attend high school and also collected soccer equipment for their sports teams. Their fundraising helped The Red Rose School build a new wing for their school this year!
Reading Buddies
Organized by a group of ESMS students, the Reading Buddies volunteer their time during Wednesday's lunch period to read to local elementary students at PS 527, next door to our school.
For more information or to join the club, please contact our Parent Coordinator Beth Servetar (esms.bethservetar@gmail.com).
Student Bake Sales
Students organize monthly bake sales at ESMS to benefit charitable causes. So far this year, students have raised money for Hurricane Relief, The Red Cross, The Make-a-Wish Foundation, and the Pediatric Cancer Foundation. Bake sales are usually held on the first Wednesday of the month. Families are asked to donate baked goods, which can be dropped off in Beth's office prior to the sale.
The Blood Drive
Students organize two blood drives each year to support The New York Blood Center in its critical mission to save lives at hospitals throughout New York City.
Project Cicero
Students collect new and used books in good condition to donate to Project Cicero, a non-profit organization designed to supplement school and classroom libraries in under-resourced New York City public schools. For more information, please contact our Parent Coordinator Beth Servetar (esms.bethservetar@gmail.com).
Adopted Elephant Program
Students raise money to support our adoptive elephant, Murit, orphaned as a baby in Samburu, Kenya, and rescued by The David Sheldrik Wildlife Organization. For more information about our little guy, check out the diary links on the home page of this website or log onto the Sheldrick Wildlife Trust website. To get involved, see our Parent Coordinator Beth.
Food and Clothing Drives
Under the leadership of The Student Council, students collect donations for The New York Common Pantry (formerly known as The Yorkville Pantry), a non-profit organization dedicated to reducing hunger throughout New York City. Located just a few blocks from ESMS, the New York Common Pantry is the city's largest community-based food program, capable of helping thousands of families in need.
Throughout the year, students also collect gently used coats, hats and other clothing for local homeless shelters.
Change for ESMS
Each fall, Student Council members collect change from the student body, families and friends to support student initiatives and worldwide charities. In previous years, Change for ESMS has donated money to Hurricane Sandy victims; students at our sister school, The Red Rose School in Kibera, Kenya; and Heifer, International, a charitable organization that fights world hunger and poverty.
ASPCA
Student bake sales benefit our neighborhood chapter of the ASPCA.
